Residential Permaculture Design

What is permaculture?

Permaculture is about closing the loop, taking responsibility for your needs and the ways that you fulfill those needs, taking care of the earth and ALL of its inhabitants, reconnecting ourselves with the community we live in and the ground we live upon.
What does it mean to close the loop?
Closing the loop means to - as much as is possible - turn waste into resources; turn problems into solutions; fulfill needs without depleting resources and dispose of waste without polluting.
What are some of the elements that might be included in a Permaculture Design? (You may choose to integrate all or some of these design elements into your garden. )
  • Compost
  • Annual and perennial fruits, nuts, and vegetables
  • Water Catchment
  • "Woodland" edible gardens with emphasis on Guild planting
  • Prevention of water run-off
  • Minimization of maintenance needs
  • Integration of useful animals into the garden system: chickens, rabbits, fish...
  • Simplicity of design to improve productivity and ease of maintenance
  • Habitat for local wildlife
  • Use of local and sustainable materials
  • Emphasis on native plants
  • Soil fertility improvement
  • Play areas for children and/or pets
  • Outdoor entertainment and/or contemplation areas
