| Creekside Restoration | The Rain Gardens | Hillside Plant Walk | Bank stabilization | Buffer planting strips | The Plan |
| The Lucerne Beach Club buffer project was a collaboration between the beach club and its caretaker, Charlie Lawson; Laura Wilson of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension; Liz Petterson of the Hancock County Soil and Water Conservation Service and Kirsten Reberg-Horton of Kalmia Landscape Design. | |||||
| The Rain Garden | |||||
| Rain gardens are designed to catch run-off from roofs or other impermeable surfaces. They are shallow bowls in the landscape filled with 40% sand, 30% soil and 30% compost, covered with a layer of rocks, and interplanted with water-loving plants. They are often accompanied by a rock filled swale or extended gutter system to direct the water from the roof to the garden (at your home, you would want to place your rain-garden 6-10' from the house to prevent the water settling into your basement.) These rain gardens allow run-off from a rain event to slowly settle and filter into ground water. This rain garden contains: Blue Flag Iris, Bog Rosemary, Marsh Marigold, Cardinal Flower and Joe Pye Weed. | |||||

| This is the beginning of the buffer strip that will separate the volleyball area and the beach. This soil is extremely sandy. We will amend it with 16 bags of compost per bed, add lime and carefully till. Then the strip will be planted with a beautiful assortment of shrubs. Buffer strips are non-compacted area that allow rain-water infiltration and catch run-off from more impermeable areas. | The planted strip contains: Summersweet Clethra, Spirea, Dwarf Fothergilla and Quince. These are all flowering shrubs that bloom at different times throughout the season. | ||||
